Will I ever be good enough?

Why are you overcome with worry, constantly thinking that you aren’t good enough?

Why does any little mistake, slip -up or shortcoming make you think you’ve “lost” your salvation? That God’s wrath abides on you?

I think I know why.

Because your hope of salvation is not solely built upon the finished works of Christ – to an extent, you’ve built it upon your works, merits, and ability to do good things.

However, what can we learn from this hymn about what the source of our confidence should be?

 

“My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness

I dare not trust the sweetest frame

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name”

 

We can learn that Jesus should be our source of confidence.

What is your “frame”?

The “other” thing in addition to faith in Christ that you are trusting in?

What is that accomplishment or position, cause or commitment that gives you a sense of justification before God?

If it is not Christ and him crucified it is worthless because all these things are temporal distractors, taking your focus away from the true source of hope.

Why is it so easy to fall into the error of believing that our salvation is also hinged upon our good works?

Because it validates us. It gives us a sense of achievement, but unbeknownst to us it also stirs up pride as we believe that we could even take part in our eternal redemption: When we do the right thing, we become puffed up and even praise ourselves for it.

However, this is very short-lived because when we fail and sin, it leaves us utterly paralyzed with condemnation and a sudden fear of judgement..

But you can be free from this when you meditate on this truth:

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

It’s all about Christ, that’s your source of confidence, that is your hope and stay. He is your hope of glory. He is what makes you good enough in God’s eyes.

All else (good deeds, works, service..) flows out from the deep knowledge you have of him which gives a compelling desire to follow and live for him.
